God’s Promise of a Seed

God’s Promise of a Seed

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” (Gen. 3:15).

The Bible teaches us that every form of suffering is a result of the sin of our first parents, Adam and Eve. God had created man “in His own image…male and female He created them” (Gen. 1:26). He blessed the man and the woman He made and gave them dominion over the creatures. He also placed them in the Garden of Eden, the first special place of communion with Himself. In Eden, man had everything he needed for happiness in the presence of God (Gen. 2:8-9).

However, God also taught Adam that he was “a man under authority.” Adam was not God, he was a creature in covenant with God. The God of heaven and earth had stooped down in condescending love to treat Adam as His son. As a son, Adam had an obligation to love and obey God, his heavenly Father. Sadly, Adam did not obey God, but instead relied on himself and his own understanding. He followed his wife, Eve, in eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 3:6-7). Eve was deceived by the serpent and obeyed the voice of a creature, rather than the voice of God.

We can rejoice in knowing that sin and Satan did not have the last word. Immediately after the Fall, God pronounced a curse upon the serpent, the instrument of Satan, who the Bible describes as “the father of lies and a murderer from the beginning” (Jn. 8:44). God also promised that He would put “enmity” between those throughout history who would follow the serpent and his lies and those who would follow the Seed of the woman. That “Seed” is the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ! (Gal. 3:16)

The story of the Bible is the story of how God has kept His promise to our first parents to give them a holy Seed, a Savior, who would suffer because of our sin, but who would triumph over the serpent and his lies as the one “who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron” (Rev. 12:5). It is through the Seed of the woman that God has saved sinners. In Christ, we have the victory over sin, death, and the Enemy of our souls! In Christ, we are more than conquerors through the grace of God!

“Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God , and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death” (Rev. 12:10-11).
