The LORD Reigns

The LORD Reigns

“The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting” (Ps. 93:1-2).

One of the most prominent themes in the Psalms is that of the sovereignty of God over all things. Not only is it true that God rules over all things for His own glory, but for the believer in Jesus Christ, there is great comfort in knowing that God rules over all things for the salvation of His people. This is why, in times of trouble, those who know God and who trust in His goodness can say with the Psalmist, “All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth, to such as keep His covenant and His testimonies…the secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant” (Ps. 25:10, 14).

Since we believe that God is always on His holy throne and that He is exercising His sovereign dominion through His appointed King, the God-Man Jesus Christ, we can live without fear in this world. We can comfort our hearts with the assurance that all that God is doing in our lives is ultimately for our good and for the outworking of His perfect plan of redemption through the blood of His Son. We are reminded in the New Testament that “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed in us” who believe (Rom. 8:18). We are the children of God, and therefore, we can wait patiently for the full revelation of what God has promised to His believing children, the hope of the resurrection and the glory of the life of the world to come (Rom. 8:23-24).

Though we are called to live in a world that is still groaning under the effects of the curse, and that means that we, too, will suffer in the body, we nevertheless have the promise that none of our sufferings go unnoticed by God. He gives us His Spirit so that we can pray even when words fail us for grief and sorrow (Rom. 8:26). And He assures us that He has a great and glorious plan that is much bigger than us and our suffering: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover, whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified” (Rom. 8:28-30).

Do you ever wonder what God is doing when His people are suffering? Dear believer in Jesus Christ, rest assured of this one thing. God is doing right now what He has always done. He is reigning over all things. The God who spoke the world into existence is speaking today. The God who sent His Son to the the infinite torment and condemnation of the cross for sinners is sending us into a world that needs to hear the same Gospel that is our only hope. God is reigning. He is reigning over all things. He is reigning over all things for His own glory. He is reigning aver all things for your eternal good.

May the truth of God’s sovereignty drive us to put our trust in Him today. He reigns, but He reigns as a gracious Father for us who trust in Him through His Son Jesus Christ.
